I met Mark in Palm Springs almost 20 years ago.  I had a quaint little mid-century home at the north end of town in the Racket Club area and he had the best house in the neighborhood.  He welcomed me into his life with his southern drawl and impeccable design sensibility.

We became fast friends and when he finally realized his dream of building from the ground up in Mt. Washington many years later, he asked me to participate.

He had bought an unbuildable lot high up above LA and Glendale with incredible views.  He was excited to be working with Simon Storey of Anonymous Architects to create a simple yet multifunctional space with minimal square feet and maximal views.

They created an awesome Rubik’s cube of a space, squeezing 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen with a window to the pool above out of maybe 1000 square feet.  With the use of sliding white oak panels, you can completely open the space or close it into 3 distinct rooms.

The space is pared down with minimal materials, mainly white oak, concrete and steel.  We clad the bathrooms in simple tile, all black in the primary and all white in the guest.

A fan of Brazil and midcentury design, it was Mark’s desire to add rich color and texture grounded by mid-century classics. A coveted Sling Chair by Jean Gillion purchased through MidcenturyLA takes in the view out the massive sliding window in the living room alongside a midcentury daybed covered in Zak & Fox fabric.

In the primary bedroom, we used plum linen on the custom headboard and salmon linen on the custom made bedspread.  A mustard rug with hints of raisin by Studio Shamshiri for Christopher Farr sits on the floor at the foot of the bed.

In the TV room which doubles as the second bedroom, we custom created a diminutive sofa and upholstered it in a rich rusty Maharam wide whale cord.  Although it is small, you can sink into it and cuddle for hours while watching TV.  It’s one of my favorite pieces ever.  We paired the rug with a unique light chartreuse and navy Kilim rug from Marc Phillips.

In the main living/dining area a Saarinen table and chairs from DWR are both classic and utilitarian set against the sliding wood paneling that double as doors.
